It was a chilly March
morning, but I felt only warmth as I stepped outside
the hospital following my ultrasound. A boy. I
cradled my stomach with one hand and grasped my 2
1/2 year old daughter Allie's hand with the other. I
was eager to begin making boy things, so we hurried
to the car to head to the fabric store. We chattered
during the drive thinking of boy names and nursery
themes, both equally excited.
As I pulled into the parking lot, my heart sang boy
and deep inside my boy screamed "glazed donut." I
quickly scanned the strip mall. Ah grocery store
with bakery--perfect. Allie and I headed inside to
satisfy the craving. Afterwards, we walked down the
sidewalk and turned into the fabric store. Only it
was not the fabric store. Here was a world of
stickers, papers, and all kinds of cute little
things. A whole world I did not know existed.
I hesitated and a lady approached with the standard
"can I help you?" I mumbled something along the
lines of what is this magical place. Fortunately,
she took pity on me and only sold me one item--the
first Becky Higgins book. And off I went next door
to the fabric store.
Oh, was I a goner. Here was a hobby that blended
everything I loved all into one--my kids, pictures,
sewing, color, metal, beads, ribbon. You name it and
it was in there. Three years have passed since
that discovery day. Many items have come and went. I
have scrapped for my kids, for gifts, for clients,
for a design team, for publication. But, at the
heart of it all, I scrap for me. Scrapstreet was
born of a friendship between myself and Street
Artist Elizabeth. We are both "homescrappers" who
enjoy having an online community of women to chat
with, whine to, applaud for, and simply enjoy.
So grab your favorite beverage, kick back and tell
me "What did you do today?"
