Flying High

"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." (Leonardo Da Vinci)

There is something special about being in the air. Whether it is in an airplane, a parachute, or even a hot air balloon, the feeling is the same…magical. Even just flying something in the air, like a kite, also seems to have that same enchanting feeling. We try over and over to capture emotions and feelings in our scrapbooking. Thus it makes sense that one of the hottest things out there right now is using embellishments that soar. You can find airplanes, hot air balloons, kites, helicopters and more all over papers, stamps and embellishments in our industry.

Airplanes make wonderful additions to travel pages and books. They also signify adventure or journey. Larissa’s “Family Vacation” layout just screams adventure to me. You look at it and it tells a story! And you may notice, it does it without even using any journaling. Holly’s page uses journaling, but no photos to tell her story. She creatively maps out the places she has been to and ties it all together with a small airplane. And my layout isn’t about traveling at all…it’s more about the magic. Don’t be afraid to use airplanes on non-traveling pages.

Been There, Done That by Holly Humbert

Supplies: Paper: Studio Calico, American Crafts, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper, Alphabet Stickers: Studio Calico, Stickers: Studio Calico, Ink: Ranger Industries, Floss: Martha Stewart Crafts, Font: Courier New. Tools: Punches: Martha Stewart Crafts, EK Success, Stamps: Maya Road, Paper Piercer and Needles: Making Memories.

Design Notes: I used a pre-made map paper. When I looped the baker's twine through the paper, I didn't tie knots over and over, I just used one continuous piece. I used a large needle from my Making Memories tool kit, to thread the twine through. I also didn't force myself to pin point exactly where in the state I had been, just a general area. I used the airplane sticker and a pop dot to do double duty, 1. to cover up the hole where all the twine feeds through and 2. to symbolize all the traveling I have done.

Journaling: I've never been outside the USA, but I've been a lot of places in it. Born in California, raised in Colorado. I spent the majority of my life, west of the Mississippi River. It wasn't until my family moved to Oklahoma when I was 19, that I really started traveling. For my job in Oklahoma, I got to travel all over the east coast. I drove from Cleveland, OH to Buffalo, NY over the course of a week. I've been stuck over night in Pennsylvania, two different times, two months in a row. I spent my 21st birthday alone and in airport hotel room because of that. I've flown over the Grand Canyon about 10 times, maybe more. A lot of my traveling I've been able to do by myself. In an awful detour, I was able to drive through Sate Fe, New Mexico during a sunset. It was worth the detour. I hope someday to travel outside the USA, but I still have plenty here that I haven't seen...
