Ad This
I have always been amazed by those scrappers who look through fashion magazine or home décor books for inspiration. I am totally in awe of those who use advertisements as their muse. As much as I try, I can’t wrap my brain around which part to focus on first. I have a notebook full of ads that I have pulled from magazines while waiting in the doctor’s office or the hair salon. I have yet to take them out. Thinking I was too rigid, I gave up on the notion of ads as inspiration. Then I stumbled upon a very cool blog called Ad This.
Suddenly, my perception totally changed.
The goal is simple. Have an ad and the accompanying challenge jumpstart your creativity by providing a base for a layout as well as motivating you to use a novel approach. What I love is the variety of very artistic and hip ads that are provided. When reviewing the ads from the past few months, I was drawn into the possibility of making art based upon them. What pushes me over the edge are the fabulous interpretations by the design team. Everyone has such a unique take. I quickly noticed that some designers are motivated to pick up a specific element of the ad, while some stay true to the original. I could spend hours there just taking in and examining all the art.

What being a part of this team means to you: Its great being on this team. I like working with the ads and twists and I love to create projects that inspire others to play with us. It’s always so much fun to see how we all use the ad in a complete different way! I now get my inspiration out of so many different things, like advertisements and magazines, thanks to Ad This.

What being a part of this team means to you: Interpretation of the ads is such an individual creative process with the essence forming shape/s, colour, space, light and shade, contrast and texture, even life experience. To look at the creations of fellow team members' vision of what they see is amazing and always inspiring! Layouts based on the same ad are thought provoking because the contrast can be so vast. We may all envisage the bigger picture or the even smaller detail quite differently. I've learnt a great deal from the artistry of this design team and from the ads themselves. How I think a layout will start out, is not always what the end result is! It's very much a journey.
